What is speech language therapy?

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults.

Speech

Articulation: mispronouncing sounds

Fluency: also known as a person who stutters

Voice: atypical vocal quality or problems with resonance

Language

Receptive language: trouble understanding

Expressive language: difficulty with clearly expressing thoughts, ideas, and feelings

Pragmatics: social language skills needed when interacting with others
